We want Superman to save us, we relate to Batman and the Hulk's inner demons. And who hasn't at some point felt freakish or like an outsider, a la Hellboy? As for Iron Man, he's the modern Icarus, the mortal who dares to fly.

And that touches on another reason why superheroes resonate in our collective psyche: the inner need humanity has for Myth. The stories in comic books are not new: Gods walking the earth, ordinary mortals who are gifted amazing powers, strange and wonderful magical devices. In story, these Gods and powerful mortals contend against the forces of darkness than threaten us. And the world seems brighter and safer.

But the bottom line is: these stories are fun!
